Savans from Europe notable men
of all professions one was sure to
meet at these parties drawn
hither by invitations from the
Professors and their friends for
colleges deans as well as counts
and Amherst had had quite
her share in those days --
Occasional parties of the sort
described were given now and
then by the Professors -- and a few
hospitable families in the village --
perhaps with a little less room
a little less light and fewer/finer numbers[?]
but the tone & measure were one
How clearly the revolution? of years
holds those social p? -- those
aromas of the mind -- I could
not relate the names of porcelain
or glass used in any home --
Some pictures[?] remain of quaint silver
urns[?] & pots half concealing dainty
cups around the [?] -- I do not [?] the [?]
of pots de fois gras or venison, [?]
